Fish Report going on hiatus; snow sports package to debut Dec. 7 - Allentown Morning Call- Topic: bass fishing

Fish Report going on hiatus; snow sports package to debut Dec. With hunting seasons in full swing and winter just around the corner, this will be the final fishing report of the year. The weekly fishing report will return in time for the start of trout season in March. The weekly package will focus on alpine skiing and snowboarding, but also will include occasional coverage of cross-country skiing, snow tubing and other winter activities. The snow sports page will be anchored by a weekly ski conditions report that includes complete information for resorts throughout Pennsylvania and surrounding areas. And, if we get a cold winter with plenty of ice-fishing opportunities, I’ll do my best to provide ice-fishing coverage in my regular Outdoors package, which appears each Tuesday. read more

A few salmon anglers are working hard to find decent sized silvers from 2 to 4 pounds off the main body points and in the river arms, mooching anchovy fillets or live shiners. For Nymphing, try Pheasant Tails, Cased Caddis, green rock worms, WD-40’s, Prince Nymphs, Hares Ears, Fox’s Caddis Poopa and Brassies. A few late Fall salmon have been landed in the 30-40 pound class this past week with reports of salmon being caught on sardine wrapped K-15 & K-16 Kwikfish lures in various color combos. When I fish there, I’ve been fishing 50-200 feet deep at Ski Run Shelf and Camp Richardson. read more

breast cancer patients urged to take up fly-fishing - ic Wales- About: fly fishing

But the stereotype is about to be challenged in Wales as breast cancer patients are encouraged to take up the sport to aid their recovery. A charity offering a free outdoor retreat programme will next year be offering the pastime to Welsh women who have – or have had – breast cancer. The fly-fishing programmes are run at retreats around the UK and the charity is looking for new recruits to take up a course – whose funding is backed by rural rights campaign group Countryside Alliance – in Wales next spring. salmon fishing - Salmon wiped out in attack by shoal of - Times Online

The attack took place last week at Glenarm Bay and Red Bay, Cushendun, off the scenic coastline of Co Antrim and has put the future of the Northern Salmon Co in jeopardy. Officials from the Northern Ireland Department of Agriculture’s fisheries division have carried out a full investigation and talks have been held with Michelle Gildernew, the Agriculture Minister, in an attempt to put together a financial package to save the farm and the jobs of its 12 staff. Fish farms around Britain and the West Coast of Ireland have been attacked before by jellyfish, but the type blown towards the Antrim coast by winds from the North have never been recorded in the area before. DNA 'Fin-printing' Project For Salmon Launched - Science Daily (press release)(salmon fishing)

A new effort just launched by the University of Washington’s School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences aims to help by gathering genetic information for thousands upon thousands of Pacific Rim salmon populations and creating open-access databases for managers, treaty-makers and scientists. Prior to genetic markers, fisheries scientists primarily relied on capturing young fish, putting metal or plastic tags on them and then releasing them in hopes they would be caught by a fisherman willing to return the tags to scientists. Current UW faculty are already leaders in using genetic markers to understand where marine fish and shellfish — such as cod, abalone and salmon — spend their lives, how they adapt to their environments and handle effects of human activities and environmental change. The UW School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences already has created a large database on the ranges of high-seas salmon from physical tagging efforts and the new program will work closely with the school’s existing High Seas Salmon Project. The school also has a wealth of salmon and environmental data collected as part of its Alaskan Salmon Program, established 60 years ago before Alaska was even a state. Being able to tell this population of salmon from others is the goal of an project to gather genetic information about Pacific salmon and compile it into an international database. read more

Sleepy little Canadian town gets a big lift from skiing buffs - MiamiHerald.com- Topic: canada fishing camps

At the top of Red Mountain, British Columbia, 2,900 feet above us, wind-driven snow sculpted trees into pure white creatures out of Dr. So, after years of promises, my wife and I — from Denver — together with old friends from Telluride, made the trip in January, flying to Spokane via Salt Lake City, and renting a car there. And we felt the warm, dark, low-ceiling day lodge — unchanged from 1947, hung with wooden skis and vintage racing bibs — was the perfect place for an apres-ski beer. All three serve a largely local clientele — so far — though more visitors from the States are finding their way north for the superb snow and nonexistent lift lines. While they were signing papers, another real estate agent in the office, Paula Gaul, who owns the Red Shutter Inn at the mountain, offered, out of the blue, a couple of seats the next day on her husband’s snow cat for some backcountry powder skiing. read more
