Fishing | Steelhead make themselves rare - Seattle Times- Topic: fly fishing

NWjobs | NWautos | NWhomes | NWapartments | NWsource | Classifieds | seattletimes. And even when the rivers have dropped, places like the northern Olympic coast with the Bogachiel, Calawah and Sol Duc rivers, usually a hotbed for hatchery steelhead at this time of year, aren’t seeing much action. A state Fish and Wildlife check Friday through Sunday showed 64 Bogachiel/Quillayute anglers with eight steelhead kept, and two released for a total of 254. Elsewhere places like Southworth, Manchester, Jefferson Head, Kingston, Point Monroe, Allen Bank off Blake Island, West Point, Meadow Point and Shilshole Bay have all been producing fair to good fishing at times. Other places worth trying for hatchery blackmouth are Elger Bay, Oak Harbor, Onamac Point and the Tacoma area. The season is open daily through Wednesday in the eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca (Area 6), North Sound (9), Central Sound (10), south-central Sound (11), Hood Canal (12), Neah Bay (4), Sekiu (5) and South Sound (13). read more

Topic: bass fishing - Orange County/Los Angeles Report - Local Bass and Halibut Fair … - The Log Newspaper

Another good area to target halibut this time of year is just outside the submarine canyon, located off the Newport Pier, from 90 ft. Wintertime bass fishing has been fair as of late with some nice sand bass up to 5 lbs. The best reported area is from 1 to 3 miles off the coast starting at the Newport Pier working down toward the Dana Point Headlands. There was also a report recently about some good numbers of bluefin tuna and a few albacore between the West Butterfly out toward the Cortes Bank, and around Tanner Bank. read more

Shticks, stones, funny bones - Baltimore Sun- bass fishing

For a number of years, I have been carefully tearing the back page out of Field and Stream, underlining his best lines and archiving them in travel books, cookbooks and the latest best-seller that resides in my personal library on the toilet tank. This is my way of acknowledging both his writing skill and the fact that my alma mater, Emerson College (sadly named for Charles Wesley, the carnival barker, not Ralph Waldo, the essayist), will never dedicate a Thomson wing in the campus library filled with my papers. Luckily, Field and Stream has seen fit to bundle some of Heavey’s best work into a single volume, If You Didn’t Bring Jerky, What Did I Just Eat? Heavey, a Northern Virginia resident who claims Maryland’s woods and waters as his home turf, is just as funny in hardcover as he is stuffed in a book on the back of the American Standard. read more

(salmon fishing) Female fly tiers are more prominent than males in the fishing industry - Cape Breton Post

Boyd passed away in 2001 at the age of 86 she is still considered by many fly tiers to be the first lady of Atlantic salmon fly tying. While fly fishing and fly tying are often considered to be male dominated activities, that is not the case when it comes to flies. Most flies offered for sale to anglers in North America are supplied by fly tying factories in Africa and Asia where the fly tiers are almost exclusively female. I believe these operations actually benefit fly fishing as, without these suppliers, and their reasonably priced flies, many anglers would not be able to participate in the sport of fly fishing. Her flies continue to be sought after by collectors, often fetching $1,000 a fly in auction so I expect her fly tying desk and her tools will command a high price. read more

bass fishing - FISHING: Cold Front Brings Start To Bass Spawning - Tampa Tribune

Lake Istokpoga anglers continue to catch crappie along the west wall area mostly, while bass are mostly in sparse open hydrilla areas in five to six feet of water where the thick weed is one or two feet off the bottom and protected behind a topped out area which acts as a filter barrier producing clear water â” perfect spawning areas. The Spring Lake area of Istokpoga also has been yielding decent stringers, as bass move up out of the largest deeper area of the lake into the usual spawning areas to pre-stage. Hydrilla treatment schedules will be provided once the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) completes hydrilla mapping and provides this information to the Lake Istokpoga Management Hydrilla Sub-Committee. SOS also presented to Highlands County Lakes and Recreation Director, Vicki Pontius, their plan to add Kiosks on all lake access ramps in order to provide all the lake management news ahead of time to enable lake users to have access to areas of the lake which were already treated or soon to be treated. read more
