A fantastical scene of green, yellow, pink and blue kites dancing in the air opens as Michael Banks finally gets his chance to fly a huge, red kite. Even the young actors who play Michael needed a little bit of kite-flying assistance behind the scenes, said Jimmie Lee Smith, stage manager of Chicago’s production of the hit Broadway musical. The other four suspended kites are rigged a bit more simply because they don’t have to travel from one side of the stage to another like the larger, red kite, Smith said.
