The delayed start to the redtailed surfperch fishery above Winchester Bay was another factor, but the biggest factors, so far, have been rotten bar and ocean conditions, lousy weather, below average crabbing success and skyrocketing fuel prices. A few spring Chinook still are being caught above Scottsburg and shad fishing continues at a fairly slow pace due to high river flows. Both sturgeon and striped bass fishing has been slow for the few that have actually tried it, but a few anglers have managed to make some good catches. Recently, there have been a couple of encouraging events such as the surf fishery for perch dropping off over the weekend and some crab seekers in Winchester Bay marking thousands of fish around Half Moon Bay. At least those waters fed by snow melt should have a more protracted spawning period when the bass are in shallow water and more easily reachable by most anglers. read more
