The number one question in January is will we have a cold month or a mild month, and so goes the fishing. However, should the month remain mild, anglers could be stuck in a limbo of either hav ing open water to fish or having just enough ice on the lakes and ponds to keep anglers from fishing. Should the lakes and ponds stay ice free, look for some decent crappie and bass fishing on jigs, and some bass and pickerel on minnows. We could also have a year where we have ice fishing in the northern part of the state and open water fishing in local waters, again depending on the weather. If the weather remains mild, look for occasional walleye in the river north of Trenton and some spotty crappie, perch and bass fishing in the tidal coves on the lower river. Should ice fishing break out in the state, look for the better fishing to be in the northern portion of the state and locally. read more
