Triggered by shorter days and cooler temperatures, bass feed actively as they follow their instincts to pack on pounds — more like ounces, actually — prior to the tough winter that lies ahead. The continued warmth has keep the cicadas singing along the banks of the New River, and it’s keeping bass on the prowl for the big bugs that end up in the drink. While it’s tough to top the New or the James for bass, don’t overlook smaller tributaries, which can produce good fishing, too. At Smith Mountain Lake, small bass can be found around docks but the best fish are coming from deeper brush piles. Bass fishing has been fair at Lake Moomaw and Claytor Lake, but pretty tough at Philpott Lake. read more
