Larry Reid of Clarenville said it was only a couple of decades ago that he and his friends had to drive 145 kilometres to Gander to play a course with three holes and three sets of tees for a makeshift nine-hole round. Renamed the Terra Nova Golf Resort, The Twin Rivers Course (there’s also an Eagle Creek nine-hole layout on site) has consistently made top 100 lists of courses in Canada. Carved into a hillside above the Humber River just a half-hour outside Corner Brook and about the same distance from the Deer Lake Airport, which has direct Air Canada flights from Toronto, the course features enormous elevation changes, breathtaking views and a classic Carrick design with lovely bunkers and tough but fair greens. The 10th features a huge drop â” think roughly CN Tower’s observation deck down to the Gardiner Expressway â” with views of the lake and the Marble Mountain ski slopes off in the distance. The Willows at Holyrood is a lovely nine-hole affair on the Avalon Peninsula, while Pitchers Pond near Trinity Bay is a new course that has some nice views and a couple of challenging holes. read more
