HAMMOND | Combined, Ed McCain and Michael Starcevich fish seven days a week, giving them both plenty of time to consider what will happen to their tackle and bait shop when Cabela’s opens nearby. The business is devoted to fishing gear, tackle, bait and to its specialty — providing fishing fans information they need to find where the perch, salmon and bass are biting in Lake Michigan and in the area’s other waterways. Customers have drifted back to Mik Lurch when they realized they can get the same gear — and the store’s exclusive Lurch perch lures — closer, easier and for the same price, said Colette McCain, Ed’s 24-year-old daughter, who also works in the business. Plus, Mik Lurch gets involved in area and community events, such as the free kids fishing seminar it is giving on Saturday at Wolf Lake Park during Hammond’s Festival of the Lakes and the Fourth Annual Fishing Derby it’s sponsoring that day with the Optimists Club. read more
