The Bay City State Recreation Area will host its 15th annual Winter Festival on Saturday, coinciding with Michigan’s Winter Free Fishing Weekend. Children can participate in eight stations and learn how to construct an ice fishing pole, tie fishing knots, rig their pole, design their own ”lucky” ice fishing lure, practice fish identification and learn ice safety tips from the U. The anglers of the Saginaw Bay Walleye Club and Captain Andy of Frank’s Great Outdoors will be on hand to explore ice fishing gear and teach children ice fishing tips. Free bait and loaner poles, pre-drilled ice fishing holes, free hot chocolate and popcorn near a warming fire will be provided, along with a kid’s free raffle for ice fishing prizes. Guided snowshoe hikes and nature programs on winter bird feeding by Cherri Allen of Cherri’s Feed ‘N Seed and tracking wildlife through a wetlands woods also will be offered, along with children’s puppet shows, a snowman building contest, Birdy Bingo, a kids craft corner and ice crystal treasure dig.
