Members of the Island fishing community are angered at recent statements by federal Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn and Fisheries and Oceans Canada in Moncton regarding the issuing of two mid-water trawl licences for herring in the Gulf of St. The DFO representatives claim fishers sitting as members of the Gulf Small Pelagics Advisory Committee were aware three of the six seiners fishing in the Gulf were licensed to fish mid-water trawl. He said also of key importance is that during a committee meeting last December, members were advised the Barry Group (one of the trawler licensees) would be putting forward a proposal having to do with mid-water trawl gear in the Gulf. The PEIFA is spearheading a coalition of fishers’ organizations in the Gulf area to fight the DFO decision and have the mid-water trawl licenses retracted. read more
