Mike Thompson announced Tuesday that $170 million has been included in the Farm Bill to help families and businesses affected by this year’s West Coast salmon season closures. Last year’s Central Valley fall chinook runs collapsed and this year’s returns to the Sacramento River are predicted to be even lower than last year, prompting vast ocean fishing closures to protect the stock. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez recently declared a federal fisheries disaster, authorizing Congress to provide aid to affected communities. If secured, funds would go to businesses and families in California, Oregon and Washington that are impacted by this year’s ocean salmon fishing closures.
