Szarzi said three times as many silver salmon smolt as usual were planted in the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon last year, and some of the estimated 18,000 that are expected to return already are arriving in huge numbers. Activities will include how to set up fishing gear, how to tie fishing knots, how to identify adult and juvenile fish, as well as catch-and-release demonstrations. On Wednesday, the Fish and Game sonar station two miles upstream from the saltwater recorded a daily count of only 19 fish, for a cumulative 122 silvers so far this season. According to Fish and Game, anglers can expect the Kenai silver salmon fishery to improve as August progresses. Fishermen who haven’t had their fill of sockeye fishing may also want to follow the flood of fish to the upper Kenai River and Russian River area this weekend. read more
