As Californiaâs native salmon populations collapsed earlier this year, Governor Schwarzenegger and State regulators took unprecedented emergency action to ban all commercial and recreational salmon fishing for 2008. The petition â” which was filed by California Trout, the Environmental Protection Information Center, and the Sierra Club â” requires the California Board of Forestry to hold a hearing within 30 days to examine tightening timber harvesting rules to protect coho salmon. If approved by the Board of Forestry, the coalitionâs petition would require the timber industry to begin immediately complying with new environmental standards to lessen the impact of their logging operations within all watersheds containing coho salmon, a species protected under the state and federal Endangered Species Act (ESA). Earlier this year, coalition members sued the California Department of Fish and Game for approving incidental take permit guidelines for timber regulations that violate the California Endangered Species Act (CESA), the Fish and Game Code, and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). read more
